What: Roots rock band from Birmingham.
Personnel: Mark Boger, vocals and guitar; Shane Jewell, guitar and vocals; David Fallin, bass and vocals; Michael Shackelford, drums and vocals.
Where you'll see them: Shelton will be performing May 8 at Cave 9 on Southside.
Disc: Shelton has released an EP, "Whatever Gets You Down." The CD is available at Laser's Edge and CD Warehouse in Homewood. The group is also gearing up to record a full-length disc.
Relating to the music: "The premise of most of our songs deals with ordinary situations and feelings that we all go through," Jewell says.
Band in making: "We've been playing music together for about five years with several lineup changes," Jewell recalls. "The current group formed during June of 2003 with the addition of David Fallin on bass."
Favorite song to perform: Jewell says he prefers "Don't Forget to Write."
What they hope to accomplish: "Eventually, we would like to be signed to a decent record label and have enough exposure to make people feel the way that our favorite groups have made us feel," Jewell says.
How it's unique: "We don't harbor the typical sound of Birmingham bands, past and present," Jewell says. "Our music is more derivative of west coast rock 'n' roll."
Air play: Shelton has been heard on 107.7-FM's Locals at Eleven and on 100.5-FM's Indiez Only program. The group has also received some college airplay.
Strengths: "Each member can play multiple instruments and add creative energy to the songs," Jewell says. "We also share a strangely similar taste in bands and how we think music should be performed."
What keeps them performing: "We know that music is the best career choice for us and we don't have the greatest backup plans," Jewell says.
Cover me: Often, renditions of songs by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are heard at the group's shows.
Fans: "Our ages range from 19 to 21, and our fans tend to be younger people, but I think we're pretty appealing to people of any age," Jewell says. "We love our fans and they show a ton of support and devotion to helping further our career. You know who you are."
The best part of being in the band: "We're practically brothers and we learn so much from each other," Jewell says.
Claim to fame: Shelton recently won first place in the Battle of the Bands at Room 1213 in Anniston. The group also performed at last year's City Stages.
Practice schedule: Shelton rehearses twice a week.
What to expect: "At our shows, we're confident that you can have a great time and just enjoy watching four guys do what they love," Jewell says.
